South African DJ, producer, songwriter, and entrepreneur Benny Maverick (real name Philani Kweyama) officially returns with his long-awaited debut solo album, VALENCIA — released through gamma., the global entertainment powerhouse championing African creativity across the world.
More than just an album, VALENCIA is a heartfelt tribute to Benny’s late mother, Valencia, whose strength and spirit continue to anchor his journey. The name, rooted in Latin and Spanish origins, translates to “strength,” “vigor,” and “brave-hearted one” — words that reflect the essence of the woman who raised him and his brothers single-handedly after the passing of their father.
“VALENCIA is my story, my tribute, and my declaration of growth,” says Benny Maverick. “It’s about embracing your roots, pushing creative boundaries, and staying true to yourself.”
Leading the project is “Uyadlala,” the album’s first single — available today (Friday, October 10) — alongside the official album pre-order, ahead of the full release dropping Friday, November 14, 2025, across all major streaming platforms.
Benny Maverick’s journey in the South African music scene has been one of perseverance, innovation, and impact. From his early beginnings in 2008 as a young DJ navigating Durban’s nightlife to establishing Goodsundae, one of the city’s most iconic urban events, Benny carved his own lane. His breakout moment came with the 2017 hit “Memeza” featuring Dladla Mshunqisi — a record that shook the dance floors and soundtracked an era of Durban dominance, alongside the SAMA-winning anthem “Omunye” by Distruction Boyz.
In 2021, Benny teamed up with DJ Stanky (Sizamavezi Kweyama) to form Kweyama Brothers, a partnership that delivered Platinum-certified hits like Mpumalanga and the globally recognized Piano Over Poverty (2022) — a project that earned international acclaim and took their sound across Europe.
Beyond the studio, Benny’s influence extends deep into lifestyle and culture. From Saso’s House, a premium Durban experience blending high-end nightlife with cultural energy, to the One Man Concert, his annual Easter weekend showcase — Benny continues to redefine what it means to be a creative entrepreneur in South Africa’s evolving entertainment landscape.
