Never Rush A Sunday: MORDA, Art and Style Collide in a “Break The Mold” Moment

Johannesburg’s cultural calendar rarely slows down, but Never Rush A Sunday continues to prove that the city knows exactly how to move at its own rhythm.

Last Sunday, the energy carried through Mea Culpa in Kew, where music, art and fashion collided in a multi-sensory experience that stayed true to the spirit of the “Break the Mold” series powered by Miller Genuine Draft.

At the centre of it all was Morda, who delivered a 90-minute journey through his sonic evolution — blending timeless Black Motion classics with the driving pulse of his newer 3-Step productions.

The set wasn’t just about playing tracks. It was about rewriting the rhythm of a traditional DJ performance.

Midway through the performance, Morda climbed on top of the decks — manipulating effects live while transitioning between tracks, a spontaneous moment that captured the essence of the series’ philosophy: breaking the mould of what a DJ set can be.

When Music Meets Canvas

Just meters away from the dancefloor, visual artist Karabo Poppy Moletsane was translating sound into colour.

Working on a black canvas inside a dedicated creative zone, Karabo spray-painted an evolving artwork inspired directly by the sonic energy of Morda’s set. Each layer reflected the tempo, emotion and movement of the music unfolding in real time — transforming the performance into a live visual narrative.

It was a reminder that Never Rush A Sunday isn’t just an event — it’s a creative intersection.

A Jacket That Broke the Mold

In one of the afternoon’s defining moments, Rigby (South African designer) stepped onto the stage to present Morda with a custom-designed Miller jacket, created specifically for the night.

The crowd watched as the artist received the piece before slipping it on and continuing his set — the jacket becoming part of the performance itself.

As the final track approached, Morda closed the show in signature style, delivering his iconic spin behind the deckswhile wearing the jacket — a moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the collaboration between music, fashion and culture.

A Sunday That Moves Culture Forward

With brand partners like Miller Genuine Draft and Johnnie Walker Blonde championing the experience, Never Rush A Sunday continues to position itself as more than just a party.

It’s a platform where artists, designers and performers challenge the expected — where a DJ set becomes theatre, a canvas becomes a soundtrack, and fashion becomes part of the story.

If last weekend proved anything, it’s that in Johannesburg’s creative ecosystem, the most powerful moments happen when culture refuses to stay inside the lines.
