Parliament Fire: Alleged arsonist Zandile Mafe faces terrorism charges

The Parliament accused arsonist Zandile Mafe made his second appearance in Cape Town magistrate’s court on Tuesday, as clean-shaven and wore a smart suit in contrast to his appearance last week. The State brought more charges against him in his trial for allegedly torching the parliament. He is accused of breaking into Parliament and stealing laptops, crockery and documents before setting fire to the parliamentary building. According to the charge sheet, Mafe intentionally delivered, placed, discharged or detonated an explosive device at Parliament.

Former national chairperson of the EFF, senior counsel Dali Mpofu, arrived at the Cape Town magistrate’s court to represent Mafe, who said, through legal counsel, he’d go on a hunger strike if denied to be released on bail. Mpofu told the court: “He will not exchange his liberty for food.”

Mpofu told the court Mafe has been diagnosed with schizophrenia after Magistrate Zamekile Mbalo granted the State’s application for a 30-day psychiatric evaluation at Valkenberg Hospital. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said Mafe would be observed at the hospital.
The 49-year-old from Khayelitsha faces charges of housebreaking with intent to steal and theft. He also faces two counts of arson, possession of an explosive device and destruction of essential infrastructure. The new National Assembly building was completely destroyed. In the old National Assembly, the fifth floor — where the gym and offices are situated — was destroyed and the floors beneath, especially the fourth floor, suffered water and smoke damage.

Civil society, activists and lobby groups are expected to hold demonstrations outside the court as they believe Mafe is being used as a scapegoat.

A small crowd gathered outside the court chanting #FreeZandile.

Already, the Black People National Crisis Committee (BPNCC), homeless organisations and community groups have indicated they will be marching.
